How to unlock a password-protected PDF

Remove the password from a PDF you own so it can be edited and shared.

  1. 01

    Open Unlock PDF

    Go to makemypdf.com/unlock-pdf.

  2. 02

    Upload the locked PDF

Drop the file onto the upload area.

  3. 03

    Enter the password

Type the password you use to open the PDF. This is required — the tool does not crack passwords.

  4. 04

    Click Unlock

The tool opens the file with pdf-lib, strips the encryption, and rewrites a plain copy locally.

  5. 05

    Download the unlocked PDF

Save the unencrypted version to your device.

Frequently asked questions

Can this tool crack PDFs I don't know the password to?

No. You must provide the correct password. Cracking passwords is both slow and typically illegal on PDFs you don't own.

Does my password get sent anywhere?

No. The password is used locally to decrypt the PDF; nothing is transmitted.

What if the PDF has an owner password and no user password?

Owner passwords restrict printing and copying but don't require a password to open. Unlock PDF removes those restrictions too.
